Key Distinctions Between SMS & MMS Messaging

Key Distinctions Between SMS & MMS Messaging

BY PARKER MITCHELL

Once you have built your audience and have your message, then it is time to decide between an SMS or MMS message.  Here are the pros and cons of each:

SMS Messages

Pros:

  • Most affordable messaging option
  • Send to a Target List
  • Attach Mobile Coupons
  • Attach Mobile Webpages

Cons:

  • 160 character limit

*Above is an example of an SMS message.  To show that SMS can usually accomplish the same things as MMS in most instances, I added a Short URL link for a Mobile Webpage which can be created for your messages.  I also created a Short URL for this page.  These Short URL’s are https://swurl.it/E8M7T (mobile webpages are meant for mobile optimized and will not look the same on desktop) and https://swurl.it/M6I3Y. The cool thing about using Short URL’s is that you can track your clickthrough rate and see what percentage of customers clicked on the link. You may want to create more compelling copyright content if people are not clicking on your link very much.

MMS Messages

Pros:

  • 500 character limit
  • Alternative message for non-MMS supported contacts
  • Attach a .jpg Image File
  • Attach a .mp3 Audio File
  • Attach a .3gp Video File
  • Attach a .gif Animated Image File
  • Send to a Target List
  • Attach Mobile Coupons
  • Attach Mobile Webpages

Cons:

  • More expensive

*Above is an example of an MMS message. An MMS message is sent in 3’s (counts as 1 tho) and there is even a 4th section you can add which is a title description and goes in between the title and media content.  These messages were so big on the i-Phone screen so I separated them into two pictures side-by-side.

In short, MMS is fancier. However, simplicity is important and most messages people want to send via MMS can be sent with SMS by implementing creative features such as creating a Mobile Webpage with additional content.
